estimation. so i think this is as much about precluding where they see the obama administration going as it is about this nomination. >> john: and that he wants to change the pentagon on an constitutional level. joe, your thoughts? >> well, my thoughts, yes that's exactly right. he's going to change the pentagon as an institution because as a former senator he knows the ins and outs of how the budget process works knows how to get the numbers down. he and obama are kindred spirits. and they both kind of have the same world-view. they both are willing to be contrary to their own party loyalties. they're both willing to do the tough decisions to make decisions that won't necessarily be popular with their own people and get it done for the good of the country. so i think hagel brings credibility to that position, not only as somebody who has been a long-time public servant but someone who understands military culture and who has actually been there. that credibility is going to go a long way. i think from the white house perspective this could be a bit of muscle flexing for the second-te
. according to the obama administration the rate of increase in healthcare spending went up 3.9% in 2011. a mall amount. it's the same increase that we saw in 2009 and 2010. for the record those are the lowest up ticks in more than half a century. pretty good. now for the bad news. anthem blue cross wants to hike their premiums by 26%. insurers in florida and ohio have already increased patients' rates by 20%. how is this happening and what can be done to stop it? we're going to put those questions to dave jones, who is leading the charge against the wild rate hikes that the insurance companies are planning. he's coming to us from sacramento. dave welcome inside "the war room." >> a pleasure to be with you jennifer. >> jennifer: tell us for people who have not been following this, why are these rate hikes happening in some states and not in others? >> the problem in california and other states is that there is nothing in the affordable care act or in state law that gives the insurance regulator the authority to reject excessive health insurance or hmo rate hikes. that's a glaring loophol
in washington continues to turn. and cabinet secretary has resigned out of the obama administration. who was it? well tell you in just a few moments. first, we'll go to out to los angeles, our current news update with lisa ferguson. >> hey peter. good morning bill. good morning everyone. more gun debate as vice president joe biden takes on a new round of meetings along with attorney general eric holder. first they'll speak with wildlife and sporting groups at 11:45 this morning. on to gun owner's groups including the nra and representatives from the entertainment industry this evening. kathleen sebelius wills attend some of the meetings. it is a big step for president obama's new gun violence task force launched in the wake of the massacre at sandy hook elementary. but it did not necessarily leave many with high expectations. businesses that sell a lot of guns like walmart will also be in on some meetings. those groups are more likely to be influenced by the nra since they're making a big profit off those firearms. and they do not want to appear too entrenched in the white house's anti-gun push
an unimportant factor but the obama administration is reaching out to jewish groups to get his nomination. do you think statements related to israel are going to pose a problem for him? >> i don't know. i think it will cause some problems yes. it will probably lose him some votes, but i have been under the spotlight a lot less in my life than you have or senator hagel and i have had things come out not quite right, and the question is whether he would have israel's back as defense secretary. and i would like to hear some details on if he would. i think israel does need to rethink it's settlements policy but he would not have a big role in those decisions anyway. he has to help israel's military be strong enough to defend their security. >> jennifer: there was another important nomination today which was john brennan being nominated to head the cia. your take on him given his criticism on the use of interrogation techniques. >> i think he'll get a knew criticisms from the left but these will be from democrats who don't want to see president obama's nomination defeated. and br
't there more prominent women being looked at in these positions? that may not be the obama administration's fault. it may be a fault of why aren't these women being promoted more to begin with why is sus afternoon rice pretty much the only person being mentioned for secretary of state? there should be more women since women make up more than half the population. it's getting better that they are at least mentioned for many. for many years obviously there were no women in the cabinet. but it's not good enough. i think the obama administration is saying we are noticing you are not putting women in, i think is important. >> amanda, why didn't we see the same kind of reaction particularly from the right, you know, when bush was approximatelypresident? i found it kind of striking yesterday on "meet the press"that, you know, mike murphy and hailee barber were making shots. >> on diversity. >> exactly. it's just -- it kind of begs the question of credibility from the attackers. >> uh-huh. >> do you think it's a fair point? >> well, i think that -- i mean this may say a
it is celebrating torture or whether they got information from the obama administration classified information they shouldn't have. and will this hurt its chances in the academy awards? 1-866-55-press. we'll be back. talking movies on the "full court press." >> announcer: this is the "full court press." the "bill press show" live on your radio and on current tv. stephanie miller rounds out current's morning news block. >> you're welcome current tv audience for the visual candy. just be grateful current tv does not come in smellivision. the sweatshirt is nice and all but i could use a golden lasso. to wind the war down is picking up speed. president obama held the news conference with afghan president hamid karzai it followed two days of talks between karzai and top administration officials including secretary of state hillary clinton and secretary of defense leon panetta. president obama reported that american troops would continue to fight along side afghans until 2014 when the war would be over. but it would about to change. >> obama: let me say it as plainly as i can. starting this spring our troops will have a different mission. training advising, assisting afghan forces. it will be an historic moment. and another step towards full afghan sovereignty, something that i know president karzai cares deeply about, as do the afghan people. >> john: for his part, president karzai praised the agreement we reached with mr. obama and highlighted peace talks that are supposed to provide a political solution to the conflict. >> we also agreed on the steps that should be taking in the peace process. we agreed on allowing the taliban office in qatar in doha where the taliban will engage in
